Carson Pass (Highway 88).

These are major passes that Caltrans prioritizes and regularly plows. Many of the other roads through the Sierra are simply closed during the winter months, like Sonora Pass or Monitor Pass.

If you want to walk among the tufa towers, head to the South Tufa area.

But be mindful of your GPS.

It might try to send you off Highway 395 onto Test Station Road .

Don’t take it in winter.

It’s unpaved. It can be muddy, icy, or completely sketchy.

Instead:

Take Highway 120 West.
Follow the signs to South Tufa.
Stay on the mostly paved route.

It’s so much better than getting routed down the unpaved road.

Once you’re there, bundle up and walk the shoreline. Steam rising off the water. Snow crunching under your boots. Jagged formations everywhere.

June Lake (Winter Walk to the Beach)

If you’ve never seen June Lake in winter, you’re missing out!

The road down to the beach parking lot is closed at the gate in winter.

Just park safely near the gate and walk the short stretch down to the shoreline.

Frozen edges. Snow-dusted pines. Mountains reflected in still water.

It’s another Eastern Sierra scene that’ll stick with you for the rest of your life.

Arriving in Mammoth Lakes

When you roll into Mammoth Lakes, it immediately feels different.

Snowbanks on the side of the road. Pine trees are heavy with fresh powder. The Village glowing at night.

Stay in town. I promise it will make everything easier:

Restaurants are within walking distance.
There's free (And good!) public transit.
Close access to Mammoth Mountain.
Less driving in the snow.

And when a storm hits (because eventually one will), you’ll be glad you have a cozy place to stay.

What to Do in Mammoth Lakes During the Winter

There are two types of Mammoth visitors:

The ski-all-day crowd.
The “I want winter without committing to skiing” crowd.

This itinerary works for both.

Snowshoe to Minaret Vista (Beginner-Friendly and Stunning)

Rent snowshoes from Black Tie Rentals. They’ll deliver them to you, which is super convenient.

To access the trail:

Park at Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge.
Follow Minaret Road uphill.
Stay to the right to avoid skier traffic.

It looks like you’re entering ski-only terrain, but you’re not. Just follow the road.

The trail is regularly groomed, which means conditions are usually solid and manageable.

On a clear day, the Minarets rise dramatically in front of you.

It’s one of the most rewarding winter views in Mammoth without requiring expert-level fitness.

Snowshoe to Hot Creek Geological Site (Harder, But Worth It)

This one is different.

You’ll want a solid breakfast to fuel a full day of stops, short hikes, and scenic overlooks. Once you head south from Carmel, food options become limited, so plan accordingly.

We opted to take lunch with us. There are dining options in Big Sur, but we just didn't want to spend time sitting down waiting for food, so we could have more time exploring.

Strategy: Drive South First, Then Work Your Way North

A smart way to explore Big Sur is to drive to your furthest southern stop first, then work your way back north. This allows you to hit popular spots later in the day and end closer to Carmel.

Stop 1: Limekiln State Park

Limekiln State Park offers one of the most rewarding short hikes in Big Sur. The trail winds through a redwood forest, alongside a creek, and leads to historic lime kilns dating back to the late 1800s.

The contrast between dense redwoods and rugged coastline makes this stop feel uniquely Big Sur. On the drive here, you’ll pass beneath Paul’s Slide, a dramatic and iconic reminder of how wild and ever-changing this landscape is.

Why it’s worth stopping:

Easy, family-friendly hike.
Redwoods + history in one place.
Far less crowded than many Big Sur stops.

Stop 2: Big Creek Bridge (Gamboa Point Overlook)

One of the most underrated viewpoints in Big Sur is the overlook near Gamboa Beach. From here, you get sweeping views of Big Creek Bridge framed by steep coastal cliffs and open ocean.

This spot is perfect for photos without the crowds you’ll find at more famous bridges.

Stop 3: McWay Falls

McWay Falls is one of Big Sur’s most iconic landmarks. This rare “tidefall” drops directly from a granite cliff onto a pristine beach below.

The viewpoint is accessible from the parking area at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, making it a must-see even if you’re short on time. You'll have to cross Highway 1 and walk along it for a minute or two to reach the viewpoint. So be careful!

Tip: The waterfall is most dramatic after winter rains, but beautiful year-round.

Stop 4: Coastal Vista Point Near Partington Cove

Some of the best views in Big Sur aren’t labeled on a map.

Just south of Partington Cove, you’ll find an unassuming pullout with sweeping coastal views that stretch endlessly along the cliffs.

This is a great place to slow down, take photos, and simply appreciate the scale of the coastline.

When we stopped here, we could see several whales on their journey south. If you hang around long enough during migration season, typically December through April, you may see some, too!

Stop 5: Partington Cove

Partington Cove is a short but steep hike that leads to one of Big Sur’s most picturesque hidden coves.

The trail descends along a cliff where you’ll come to a fork in the trail. Head left over the wooden bridge and through an old (but stable) tunnel to find beautiful turquoise water framed by rocky cliffs.

It’s a small adventure that feels far more secluded than many of the area’s more famous stops.

Good to know:

Wear sturdy hiking shoes.
The hike back up is short but steep. I saw five-year-olds doing it, so it’s not too bad.

Stop 6: Bixby Bridge (Sunset if Possible)

No Big Sur itinerary is complete without a stop at the famous Bixby Bridge.

This iconic concrete arch bridge is one of the most photographed spots in California, and for good reason. If you can time your visit for sunset, the golden light spilling over the cliffs and ocean creates an unforgettable moment.

Important: Park only in designated areas and be mindful of traffic. Safety here matters. I personally witnessed highway patrol give out two tickets while I was here. So, seriously, do not park illegally!

Best Time to Visit Big Sur

Big Sur is beautiful year-round, but each season offers a different experience:

Spring: Wildflowers, flowing waterfalls, fewer crowds.
Summer: Clear skies and long days, but heavier traffic.

And I can say that only as confidently as someone who hasn’t been to Japan yet can! Hey, I’m just telling you like it is.

They went all in on the Japanese vibes. From the perfectly manicured gardens and Japanese maple trees that greet you at the entrance to the koi pond at the heart of the property and each of the seven unique rooms, it’s hard not to feel like you're in another part of the world.

The best part is that Okaeri is only 90 minutes away from the Bay Area in Napa Valley.

That means you can sip matcha in the morning, feed koi fish in the afternoon, and then spend the evening wine tasting at world-famous vineyards.

If you’ve ever wanted to hike straight into “hell,” Lassen Volcanic National Park has just the spot for you. It’s called Bumpass Hell, and yes, the name is just as crazy as the hike itself.

This beautiful trail takes you through California’s largest hydrothermal area, where you’ll pass steam vents, boiling mud pots, and sulfur-filled air.

It feels like walking on another planet, yet it’s only a few hours’ drive from the Bay Area.

If you’re planning a trip to Lassen, here’s everything you need to know about the Bumpass Hell Trail, from when to go, what to pack, and how to make the most of your adventure.

Why Hike Bumpass Hell?

Some hikes in California smell like a rainy forest, others like a beach on a warm day, but not many smell like rotten eggs.

And (believe it or not) that’s part of the charm of Bumpass Hell.

This hydrothermal basin is unlike anywhere else in the state. Imagine neon-colored pools, steaming ground, and boardwalks that take you past boiling mud.

The trail itself is only 3 miles round-trip (about 90 minutes), but every step feels like you’re uncovering a new, otherworldly detail.

The Trail at a Glance

Distance: 3 miles round-trip.
Elevation: 439 ft elevation gain.
Difficulty: Easy to moderate (expect some short climbs).
Time: 90 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how long you linger at the basin.
Best Season: Mid-July through October (snow blocks access the rest of the year).
Trailhead Location: Bumpass Hell parking area.

The trail starts high above the basin, winding gently through meadows and over ridges before dropping into the hydrothermal area itself.

Wooden boardwalks guide you safely past the bubbling chaos, because trust me, you do not want to test that ground with your own two feet.

The Story Behind the Name

So why “ Bumpass Hell?” Back in the 1860s, a settler named Kendall Vanhook Bumpass discovered the basin.

Unfortunately for him, he fell through a thin crust of earth straight into boiling mud. He survived, but lost his leg, and reportedly shouted, “Oh hell!” as it happened.

His painful misstep stuck in history, and the area has been known as Bumpass Hell ever since.

No need to worry that you’ll lose any legs while hiking here. As long as you stay on the trail, that is.

Planning Your Visit

Getting There

Lassen Volcanic National Park is in Northern California, about:

3.5 hours from Sacramento.
4 hours from the Bay Area.
1.5 hours from Redding.

The drive alone is worth it, with winding mountain roads, alpine lakes, and endless forest views.

Park Fees

Like all national parks, Lassen requires an entrance fee:

$30 per vehicle (valid for 7 days)

Parking

The Bumpass Hell lot fills up fast, especially mid-morning. To avoid crowds, I recommend arriving before 9 a.m. or later in the afternoon.

Snow keeps this trail (and most of Lassern) closed for much of the year. It usually opens by mid-July and stays accessible until the first big storms of October or November.

So s ummer and early fall are your best windows to do this hike!

What to Pack

Even though it’s a short hike, the high elevation and sun exposure can sneak up on you.

Here’s what I’d bring:

Water: At least 1 liter per person.
Snacks: Trail mix, fruit, or even a picnic to enjoy on the boardwalk benches.
Sun Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brim hat (shade is minimal).
Layers: The trailhead is over 8,000 ft. Mornings can be chilly, even in August.
Good Shoes: Sturdy hiking shoes or boots with grip for rocky sections.
 Camera/Phone: You’ll want photos of this alien landscape.

Pro tip: If you’re sensitive to smells, maybe pack a bandana. The sulfur “rotten egg” aroma is strong, but part of the experience.

Bumpass Hell is beautiful, but it demands respect. A few tips:

Stay on the boardwalk: The ground is thin, and temperatures just below the surface can exceed 300°F .
Pace yourself: At 8,000+ ft elevation, the air is thinner. Take breaks if you need them.
Watch the weather: Afternoon thunderstorms can roll in quickly. Avoid being caught on exposed ridges.
Facilities: Restrooms are only at the trailhead. None in the basin.

Battery Spencer is the spot if you're looking for a postcard-perfect view.

Located just north of the bridge in the Marin Headlands, this old military outpost puts you directly above the bridge’s towers with the San Francisco skyline glittering in the background.

It’s dramatic, iconic, and absolutely worth braving the wind.

Tip: Get there early for sunrise. The soft morning light + low fog drifting under the bridge = one of the best views you’ll ever see! Sunset can be just as beautiful!

Parking: Free lot nearby, but it fills up quickly, especially on weekends.
Hike Required? Short walk from the parking area.

Sometimes you’ll catch the bridge and Sutro tower shrouded in fog, and it’s absolutely beautiful!

Expect: Rolling hills, cool birds riding thermals overhead, and a sweeping view of the entire Bay.

Best Time to Visit: Sunset. Bring a jacket and a blanket. Thank me later.

Parking: Limited shoulder parking.
Trail Info: Short walk from the road, some elevation gain.

4. Round House Café (Bridge + Latte = Yes)
